What is reformer and how is it different to mat pilates?

Mat-based exercise classes typically involve the incorporation of fundamental functional movements, such as squats, crunches, hip hinges, lunges etc, into floor-based exercises. The classes are generally body weight only, with the occasional addition of free weights or props to target specific muscle groups and challenge movement patterns. The reformer is a versatile piece of equipment that allows for full body resistance training. The reformer works via spring-loaded resistance and allows us to challenge each and every client by taking these fundamental movements and adding load via resistance. Essentially, many of the fundamental aspects of mat-based exercise are adapted onto the reformer, with the resistance of the springs working either against you to load the movement or with you to increase support.

What class should I start with?

If you have never been on a reformer before or are new to the studio, we recommend starting with a Spring Classic Beginner. If you are unsure what to expect from this class, view "WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A BEGINNER CLASS?" in our FAQs section. Other classes that may be suitable are Peaches and Cream, hardcore, mat pilates or yoga. All of these classes are taught at a beginner level.

I've never done Pilates before. Should I start with an individual or group booking?

Our Spring Classic Beginner is designed to be suitable for those who have never used a reformer or been in a group class setting. Just arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time, and the instructor will run you through everything you need to know! You will also receive ongoing support from one of our experienced Pilates instructors throughout the class. That being said, if a private session sounds more like your style, email us at stepney@studiospring.com.au/ goodwood@studiospring.com.au and we would be happy to arrange that for you.

Do I need to be fit to attend a class?

Absolutely not. There is no baseline level of strength at Studio Spring. We understand that the reformer can feel intimidating if you have not used it before but do not panic, our trainers are there to look after you! As you continue to attend classes, you will find your groove, get in sync with the machine and start building on your current strength level. Our classes are not about being fit, but doing targeted, intentional movements and giving yourself 45 or 30 minutes to connect with the community and, most importantly, yourself. Just have fun - we don't take ourselves too seriously and pride ourselves on our being a warm, supportive and inviting space for you to move your body to whatever capacity!

What if I'm already fit? What can reformer do for me?

We truly believe that reformer exercise is like no other and can challenge even the most passionate fitness devotees. The considered combination of resistance training and specific, well targeted exercise selection (in addition to our studio values of silliness and connection) will leave you feeling challenged in a brand new way and ignite a new fitness rabbit hole for you to dive into. Don't believe us? Come and try it out for yourself!

Is there an age limit at the studio?

Sorry spring chickens, you must be at least 16 years of age to attend our classes. Children younger than this age are not to be left in the reception area or the studio while you attend classes. You may be turned away from the studio should you arrive with your children as it is not a safe environment and can cause disruptions to other clients.

How many times can I use the introductory offer?

Our two introductory packs are: Spring Fling - 2 classes for $30 (14 day expiry from the date of the first booking)Sunny 7 - 7 classes for $70 (21 day expiry from the date of the first booking)These packs are offered at a discounted rate to allow new clients to have a taste of the studio and decide if Studio Spring will be a good fit for them - as such these introductory packs are strictly one (1) per client.

What do I need to know in order to prepare myself for my first class?

You’re ready to start your pilates journey with Spring - Welcome! You should be proud of yourself for making the decision to take the time and invest in your health and fitness. No matter your experience or current fitness level, Spring has something for you. If you’re completely new to Pilates, we’ve put together some tips to bring you up to speed!

1. What to bring: A towel, water bottle and your best can-do attitude!

2. Arrive 10 minutes early Don’t forget to arrive 10 minutes before your first class to meet your instructor. Your instructor will help settle you into the space and give you a run down of the reformer before you start.

3. Take your shoes off
When you’re ready to jump onto the reformer class, take your shoes off and leave them in the lockers provided. Some people prefer to workout with no socks but if you would rather wear them, you're more than welcome - some people choose to wear for warmth and comfort. We also have Studio Spring grip socks available for purchase at the studio.

4. Leave your jewellery at home for this one Sharp edges on your jewellery are a hazard for you, your teacher and the equipment you use in the studio. If you wear any jewellery, it’s best to take it off and keep it safely at home or in the lockers

5.Leave your judgement at the door
The reformer may feel foreign when you are first starting out, so be gentle with yourself. The class is for your mind and your body - not your ego. Some movements may feel a little clunky and awkward at the start but stick with it, the more classes you commit to, the more comfortable you will feel on the reformer. Practice makes perfect!

Can I attend multiple studios?

Unfortunately our 2 locations run completely independently of each other, so packs are not able to be transferred or shared between the two.We understand that some of you may live in the middle of our two locations, and as such we are happy for you to purchase packs from each studio and have both packs extended to allow for this. You are also able to purchase introductory packs for each studio, so if you're wanting to try each studio to decide which location is the best fit for you this is a great way to do so!

Extra information about our classes

What can I expect from a Peaches & Cream class?

GLUTES!
Peaches and Cream is 30 minutes of targeted glute and lower body exercises. The class operates at the entry reformer level, with plenty of spring and movement options to allow you to regress or progress each exercise as needed. Whilst we all love our glutes feeling juicy, strengthening your butt muscles is also vital for proper pelvic alignment, improved balance, lower back support and injury prevention - it's more than just getting peachy!Another favourite, you can expect to leave this class feeling satisfied and strong (albeit a little shaky) after a deep booty burn.

What can I expect from a Hardcore class?

30 minutes of abs. Need we say more? Hardcore is perfect for anyone wanting to get a quick burn in or focus on building their core strength and stability. We utilise the benefits of both mat and reformer exercises to help clients learn to engage their core and build endurance through various movements, including but not limited to crunches, planks, obliques and dynamic stability work. While that may sound relatively straightforward, we keep things interesting by throwing fun and challenging variations of these movements.

What is the different between the Push/Pull classes?

These classes are designed to target specific muscle groups that work in conjunction to perform an overarching movement - either pushing or pulling movements.

Muscle groups that you can expect to be working in:

  • Upper Body Push = Chest, Shoulders and/or Triceps
  • Upper Body Pull = Back and/or Biceps
  • Lower Body Pull = Hamstrings and/or Glutes (focusing on compound lifts of deadlifts, RDL’s and hip thrusts)
  • Lower Body Push = Quads and/ or Glutes (focusing on compound lifts of squats and lunges)

Pregnancy

Can I still attend regular classes if I'm pregnant?

Being pregnant is such an individual experience, and very rarely is one pregnancy exactly the same as another. While we do allow Mums-to-be to participate in regular group classes, it is something that must be discussed with your healthcare team prior to ensure that it is safe for you to do so. As such, we ask that as soon as you become aware of your pregnancy, you let us know (in studio or via email) so that we can forward our 'Authorised to Exercise form' to be completed with a member of your healthcare team (GP, midwife, OB/GYN etc.). This form will ensure that we are aware of any precautions that may need to be taken and help us to care for you to the greatest of our abilities. We always recommend attending our Pre & Post Natal classes when pregnant, as they are specifically designed to be suitable for pregnancy.

Do you offer Pre or Post Natal classes?

We absolutely do have Pre & Post Natal classes and would love to have you join!

These classes are currently held on:
Stepney - Thursday at 10:30am
Goodwood - Wednesday at 10:30am

These classes are run at a smaller capacity, and therefore allow for a greater level of attentiveness to each participant - we understand that being pre and post-natal is a greatly variable experience, and by having these reduced numbers we allow the space needed for modifications, openness and adaptability. Whether you're looking to slow down as you head towards the 3rd and 4th trimester or amp up as you begin to get back into exercise, we encourage you to work with your body during each phase, accepting the changes that come. These classes are more often than not run by a physio, physio student or EP and all our trainers go through PPN training prior to teaching this class type, however please note we do not offer health rebate on classes at Spring, despite a lot of our trainers and our studio owner, Lauren being qualified physio(s).

Are there any special requirements if I'm Pre or Post Natal or currently pregnant?

Upon booking into our Pre and Post Natal, you will be required to complete our 'Authorised to Exercise form' with a member of your healthcare team (GP, midwife, OB/GYN etc.). This form will ensure that we are aware of any precautions that may need to be taken and help us to care for you to the greatest of our abilities. While these forms do require you to share some medical history, we take great care to maintain confidentiality and this information will only be passed on to your class trainer if it will influence the way that the class is run. We also request that you inform your trainer if you are pre or postnatal if attending regular group classes so that adaptations can be made to the classes when required.

How long after birth can I attend classes?

The Postnatal journey is extremely individual, and therefore a specific time limit on returning to regular classes is not enforced within our policy. We do ask that you discuss your return with your healthcare team prior, and ensure that our 'Authorised to Exercise' form is kept up to date to ensure that we are aware of any changes in your health status. Verbal and/or written consent from your health care professional is required for your safety.

How do I book a class?

We strongly recommend downloading the Studio Spring App to make your bookings. This app has been purpose designed to be as user friendly as possible, and is the best way to purchase packs, view the schedule and manage bookings all in the one place.

Once you have purchased a pack, you will simply need to click on the "Book" tab at the bottom of the screen, select the class that you would like to book, and then click "book". Once you have booked in (if you have your email + text notifications enabled) you will receive both a text and email confirming this booking, as well as giving you the option to add this class to your calendar. If the class that you would like to book is full, you will have the option to jump onto the waitlist.

To avoid being unnecessarily charged, we ask that you treat a waitlist booking like a normal booking. That means, if you are on a waitlist and no longer intend to attend, please remove yourself from the waitlist as early as possible. If you are first on the waitlist and a spot becomes available in the class, you will be automatically added into this place. If you no longer wish to attend, you will have the option to decline this space, and it will then be offered to the next person on the list. If you get into a class from a waitlist and do not receive a text, please let us know so we can engage this feature on your account! It is likely that you have disabled your text / email notification settings and this setting will need to be enabled.

HOT TIP: Our waitlists move a lot! So we encourage you to jump on a waitlist for your favourite class time/trainer and type - you will more often than not get a spot!

How do I book in a sauna session?

Bookings can be made via our app under  “Book > Appointments > Infrared Sauna and Shower.” Bookings are 45 minutes long!

The sauna cannot be booked outside of studio/class hours to ensure we always have someone around in case of emergency while you are using the sauna.

My class is booked out; what can I do?

If a class is full, we offer a waitlist system. If you cannot get into your favourite class, you can jump on the waitlist. If we have any cancellations, you will be sent a text and/or email notification letting you know you have been added to the class. The text will request that you either respond 'Y' or 'N' to confirm your attendance - if you respond 'N' you will be removed from the class and the credit will be returned to your account. If you do not respond to the text confirming your attendance, the system will assume you are attending, and a no-show will result in the credit being forfeited.Treat a waitlist booking just like a regular booking - if you can no longer attend the class, please remove yourself from the waitlist. To make sure you receive waitlist notifications, jump onto the spring app and send an email to goodwood@studiospring.com.au/stepney@studiospring.com.au requesting that your text notifications be turned on.

What is the cancellation policy for classes?

Any class cancelled 8 hours or less prior will result in the loss of a credit. In unforeseen and extenuating circumstances such as sickness, injury or unexpected/extenuating circumstances/emergencies, these credits may be refunded to your account. In these instances please email stepney@studiospring.com.au / goodwood@studiospring.com.au / henley@studiospring.com.au so we can review your circumstances! We may require a medical certificate for refunds or transfer of credits.

Please note that we are a small business and cannot offer return of credit for aspects such as staying back at work late/change of mind for the class. Please keep this in mind when booking times that may clash with your work or personal schedules.

Can I purchase a gift card?

What if I'm not feeling 100% or have an injury?

One of the most valuable traits of a reformer is adaptability. If you have sustained an injury, we always recommend that you speak to a health professional before engaging in group exercise classes - however our knowledgeable trainers are well equipped to manage your injuries with confidence. If you are attending classes with an injury, we ask that you let your trainer know and maintain a high level of openness if something is not feeling right, as we are happy to provide modifications where required.

If you are unwell, we kindly ask that you refrain from attending the studio. In this instance, we would be happy to return this credit to your account - just email the studio and state that you have been unwell and not able to attend. In some circumstances, medical certificates may be required in order to receive a credit refund. You can send this request to stepney@studiospring.com.au/ goodwood@studiospring.com.au / henley@studiospring.com.au

Why was my class cancelled?

Classes will only be cancelled if we do not meet the minimum number of participants OR in case of an unforeseen emergency in the studio or with the trainer. We can appreciate how this can be an inconvenience, and in the rare circumstance that it does occur we do our best to give as much notice as possible - we hope to provide our community with a dose of pilates and social connectedness for a long time, so as a small business we sometimes must make tough decisions to make this possible. Your class credit will always be returned to your account, and you will receive a message / email personally from your trainer to ensure that you are notified as well as to give you the option to switch to an alternative class on the same day.
